Gwyndows Guide to Best Things To Do During Winter In Austin

Winter may be short here in Austin, but it is no less fun. We just move the festivities indoors when the weather hits below 70 F (brrrrr!). If you are looking for some new, fun activities to occupy you and your family this winter, check out these hot local spots and events we love.

Eat Off a Conveyor Belt at Kula Sushi

austin rotating sushi

In Japan, there is a conveyor belt sushi place in every neighborhood where people go to get filling, fresh fish fast. But here in Austin, we only have one place to get this experience: Kula Sushi. This Japanese chain opened an Austin location in Highland Village last year, and those who haven’t yet experienced this laidback eating style have to try it this winter. Don’t skimp on the sushi– if you eat 15 plates, you a rewarded a special surprise. Need something a little warmer than raw fish? Not a problem– Kula’s menu includes a variety of fare including a delicious ramen for only $5.80.

Kula Revolving Sushi Bar is located at 6929 Airport Blvd and is open Mon-Fri 11:30 am-10:30 pm, Saturday 11 am-11 pm, and Sunday 11 am-10:30 pm.

Carnaval Brasileiro

carnaval brasileiro

While we highly suggest making it to Rio if you ever can, Carnaval Brasileiro is an acceptable substitute for those of us still in Texas this winter. Since the mid-1970s, this raucous festival has brought samba and carnival to Austin city limits. Over the years, it has grown to be the largest Carnaval celebration outside of Brazil. Men and women don traditional (and some not so traditional) costumes and party in reckless abandon for one night in winter before the austerity of Lent. If you’ve never experienced this glitzy, glamorous party, do it this year.

Carnaval Brasileiro 2018 will be held at the Palmer Events Center on February 10th.

Eat S’mores at Halcyon Cafe

This campfire classic gets a city twist when you order the S’mores Plate at Austin coffee shop Halcyon. This Warehouse District now boasts a second Austin location in Mueller, so you can enjoy this cozy treat without battling traffic downtown. Their menu also features a selection of sandwiches, breakfast items, and other snacks, but hungry or not you can’t leave without a major caffeine fix via an espresso cocktail. Have the kids with you? Halcyon also offers handmade milkshakes and smoothies for a delicious treat minus the buzz.

Halcyon Downtown is located at 218 W 4th St (at the corner of Lavaca) and is open Mon-Fri 7 am-2 am and Saturdays 8 am-2 am.

Halcyon Mueller is at 1905 Aldrich St Suite 110 and is open Mon-Fri 7 am-12 am and Saturday/Sunday 8 am-12 am.

Stock Up on Winter Produce at the Texas Farmers Market

The easiest way to ensure your family is eating seasonally is to buy the freshest produce directly from the people that grow it. Now it’s easier than ever for Austinites to enjoy the benefits of seasonal shopping with two locations of the Texas Farmers Market. The original Mueller is still held every Sunday underneath the shelter of the Browning Hangar, making it a lovely shopping experience rain or shine. And now the suburbs have their very own version featuring a crazy expansive vendors list with the Lakeline market held on Saturdays. This winter, stock up on seasonal greats like beets, asparagus, bok choy, and greens and find new ways to incorporate them into your favorite homecooked meals.

Texas Farmers Market Mueller is located at 4209 Airport Blvd, Sundays 10 am-2 pm.

Texas Farmers Market Lakeline is located at 11200 Lakeline Mall Drive, Saturdays 9 am-1 pm.

Experience the World’s Largest Bouldering Gym at the Austin Bouldering Project

austin rock climbing

Austin’s reputation as a fit city only intensified when it opened the 50,000 square foot facility known as the Austin Bouldering Project in 2016. What is bouldering, exactly? Bouldering is rock climbing minus the ropes. Climbers are equipped with climbing shoes, chalk bags, and safety mats– that’s it. Work out your entire body and strengthen your core while challenging both body and mind to this indoor sport. You’ll build confidence as you climb new heights and meet other fit Austinites who share your interest. Swing by February 3rd for the ABD Party 2018 featuring discounted day passes ($10 before 5 pm, $5 after).

Austin Bouldering Project is located at 979 Springdale Rd #150 and open Mon-Fri 6 am-11 pm and Saturday/Sunday 9 am-10 pm.
