When summer ends and the kids head back to school, it’s a good time to start planning your cleaning routines. The summer holidays and endless days of kids running in and out have left dirt behind in your carpets. Vacuuming your carpets has kept the surface dirt off of them, however, deep cleaning them will take the process a step further and wash the carpet fibers. Deep cleaning carpets also remove dirt that has become hidden deep inside the carpets.
Experts recommend you deep clean your carpeted areas at least once a year, or every twelve months. There are other situations when you should deep clean them more often. These are some tips on when you should deep clean your carpets.
Children Living in the Home
If you have small children in your home, it is recommended you deep clean your carpets at least every six months. Children do cause more spills in a home, but those can be spot cleaned with small carpet-cleaning machines. The main reason you want to deep clean carpets more often when small children live with you is to reduce the risk of them being exposed to things hiding in your carpet.
Carpets are warm and soft and make a great area for little children to play or take a nap. The American Lung Association states because young children spend so much time in carpeted areas, they are likely to be exposed to pollution in the rugs. It is recommended you deep clean your carpets when you have small children to remove these containments and reduce your child’s chance of exposure.
Cigarette Smokers in the Home
If there are tobacco smokers in your home, you will want to deep clean your carpets every three months if they are heavy smokers, or at least every six months if they are moderate to light smokers. Tobacco smoke has numerous types of gasses and other particulate matter, including some that can cause cancer.
Harmful gasses will get absorbed into the dust in a room and end up in your carpets, upholstery, area rugs, and other soft surfaces. In one study it was discovered these toxins re-emit back into the air and recombine to create harmful compounds. These compounds become dangerous even to those who do not smoke in the home. Deep cleaning will remove these toxins and prevent them from re-entering the air you and your family breathe.
Pets in the Home
If you live with pets in your home, it is recommended you deep clean your carpets at least every six months. Area rugs and carpets trap pet dander deep within the fibers of these rugs. When you walk on these rugs, or when you vacuum them, the dander is made airborne again.
Pet dander is the tiny flecks of skin your dog or pet sheds. Dander is microscopic and will easily settle deep within your carpet. Other matters that can become trapped in your rugs by your pet are flakes from their urine, saliva, and dried feces. Vacuuming can help, but it is not enough as the vacuum will not remove the tiny particles hiding deep within the surface of your carpets. Deep cleaning is the only way to thoroughly wash your carpets and remove these particles.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports three in ten people living in the United States suffer from allergic reactions to pet dander. Cat allergies are more common than dog allergies. Pet allergens that are allowed to build up in your home, will make respiratory symptoms worsen and decrease lung functions.
